Freshwater Basins Across the Region
The environmental health of the Wet Tropics freshwater basins is assessed on water quality, habitat and hydrology, and fish. For 2019-20 the fish index is available for all basins except the Daintree.
Overall grades are provided for all nine basins in the Wet Tropics region - the Daintree, Mossman, Barron, Mulgrave, Russell, Johnstone, Tully, Murray and Herbert. Most are graded B (good) except for the Daintree which was graded A (very good) and the Barron which was graded C (moderate).
Annual rainfall was below average with November having the lowest rainfall on record in every basin. May was exceptionally wet with substantially higher than average rainfall.
