“Thousands of fish barriers in the Wet Tropics are preventing some species from completing their life cycle"

Matt Moore is a Fisheries Ecologist at Catchment Solutions who has been advising partners in the Wet Tropics on ways to improve fish connectivity.

Many of the fish species in the Wet Tropics are diadromous, which means they need to migrate upstream as juveniles from saltwater to freshwater habitat to complete their life cycles. This means that even very small barriers can prevent them from spawning.

In this podcast, Matt discusses why fish connectivity is so important, the unique challenges in improving fish passage for Australian fish and the different methods for remediating fish barriers such as dams and weirs.
