Partner Profile: Douglas Shire Council

Douglas Shire Council governs the area from north of Cairns to north of Cape Tribulation. It’s the only place in the world with two adjoining World Heritage listed areas: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics and the Council is committed to managing these well for its residents and for visitors.

Douglas Shire Council is a Reef Guardian Council

As a member of the Reef Guardian stewardship program Douglas Shire Council as developed an action plan, which outlines the actions the organisation is committed to undertaking to improve waterway health. The actions cover water managment, waste managment, land management, climate change and community actions.

The organisation has undertaken a number of projects to improve water quality including:

  • rehabilitation of dunes
  • implementing a sustainable fishing strategy
  • phasing out the use of plastics
