Freshwater

The environmental health of the Wet Tropics waterways is assessed on water quality, habitat and hydrology, and fish for 2014/15. Scores and grades are provided where data is available, with further development required for the fish index.

Nine basins are included in the Wet Tropics Report Card region including, Daintree, Mossman, Barron, Mulgrave, Russell, Johnstone, Tully, Murray and Herbert. The Daintree, Mossman and Murray only had data available for habitat and hydrology and therefore an overall grade could not be provided. The grades across the other six basins for 2014/15 are ‘moderate’.

The 2014/15 year was subject to a late wet season with annual rainfall in most basins below and very much below the long term average. A very low rainfall year results in reduced erosion, which causes lower sediment and TSS (Total Suspended Solids), and reduced runoff and nutrient and pesticide mobilisation. This provides a better water quality result for freshwater overall.
